Families navigating early cognitive decline or dementia changes

“When my parents began to decline in their mid-80s—my mom with advancing dementia and my dad with serious health issues—we wanted to keep them safely at home for as long as possible. I turned to Melissa for guidance.
Drawing on her years of experience working with older adults, Melissa helped me better recognize and understand my parents’ changing needs and their resistance to some of those changes. She helped me navigate available resources and offered thoughtful, practical suggestions along the way.
Most importantly, Melissa became a desperately needed sounding board for me and, through her guidance and suggestions, a real source of comfort to my parents.”

For nearly 30 years, I have worked with seniors as a Physical Therapist Assistant in a variety of settings, helping people regain confidence, mobility, and independence during some of the most vulnerable times in their lives. Over the years, I realized that what I valued most was not only the physical recovery process but the relationships and trust built along the way.
I have always felt deeply connected to older adults and continue to be inspired by the lives they have lived, the stories they carry, and the resilience they show through difficult transitions. My work has allowed me to support people at their sickest and most uncertain moments, often helping them navigate the fear and overwhelm that can come with returning home after illness, injury, or a dementia diagnosis.
Through this work, I began to notice how unprepared many families feel when mobility or memory changes begin affecting daily life at home. Dementia and aging-related challenges can feel overwhelming emotionally, physically, and financially, especially in rural Vermont where caregiving resources are becoming harder to access. Families are often left trying to make important decisions without enough guidance or support.
The Rooted Home was created to help bridge that gap.
I believe most people feel safest in their own home. Our homes hold our routines, our memories, our favorite belongings, and a sense of familiarity that becomes even more important as we age. When daily life starts to feel harder to manage, small thoughtful changes can make a meaningful difference in helping someone remain safer, calmer, and more independent.
My approach focuses on creating practical, simplified systems that support both seniors and the people caring for them. I help families look at the home environment with fresh eyes, identifying ways to reduce hazards, simplify routines, improve flow, and support changing mobility or memory needs while still preserving the comfort and familiarity of home.
Above all, I want families to feel calmer, more empowered, and less alone in the process. I hope the people I work with feel supported, understood, and reassured that there are still thoughtful ways to help loved ones remain grounded, safe, and connected to the place they call home.
